The Stat That Won’t Go Away

Justin Fields has a huge problem. In five NFL seasons, he’s never won a game when the other team scores 21 or more points. That’s 0 wins and 26 losses.
Think about that for a second. Out of 46 quarterbacks with at least 10 starts over the past five years, Fields is the only one without a single win in those situations.
It’s not a small sample size anymore. It’s a pattern. And it’s becoming a big issue for the Jets.

How He Got Here
Fields joined the Jets in March on a 2-year, $40 million deal after one season in Pittsburgh. The move gave him a fresh start with new coach Aaron Glenn and a chance to reunite with college teammate Garrett Wilson.
Last year with the Steelers, Fields went 4-2 in six starts before losing his job to Russell Wilson. But here’s the catch—those wins came because Pittsburgh’s defense was excellent. They rarely let opponents score big.
Now in New York, the defense is a mess. The Jets are giving up 31.4 points per game, which is the fourth-worst start in team history. Opponents score on more than half their drives.
The Numbers Don’t Lie
The Jets’ defense ranks near the bottom in almost everything. They’ve allowed 11 touchdown passes and haven’t picked off a single ball. Teams are running for 140.4 yards per game against them—that’s 27th in the league.
Fields hasn’t helped much either. After a strong Week 1 against Pittsburgh, he’s struggled badly. In his last three games, the Jets trailed by two or more touchdowns before Fields threw a single scoring pass.
Since opening week, he hasn’t thrown a touchdown before the fourth quarter.
“The Jets’ defense has been a mess, but quality quarterbacks find ways to win anyway. That’s what separates legit starters from short-term stopgap options,” wrote Jets analyst Chet Gresham.
What Went Wrong in New York

Fields started strong. Week 1 against his old team Pittsburgh looked promising. But then the wheels came off.
He missed Week 3 with a concussion after getting hit hard by Buffalo’s Joey Bosa. His head smacked the ground, and backup Tyrod Taylor nearly pulled off a comeback win against Tampa Bay without him.
When Fields returned, nothing changed. He’s completing just 57.6% of his passes. The team keeps falling behind early, and Fields only pads his stats in garbage time when games are already out of reach.
What Experts Are Saying

Coach Aaron Glenn has stayed behind Fields publicly, saying “if he’s cleared, he’s starting” after the concussion. But privately, questions are growing.
Mike Tomlin, Fields’ old coach in Pittsburgh, explained the split was mutual. “It’s free agency,” Tomlin said. “It was not solely our choice; it was his as well.”
Fields wanted a fresh start. He wanted to prove he could lead a team. But five games into the Jets experiment, nothing is working.
London Presents a Chance
Today’s game in London against Denver gives Fields a real opportunity. The Jets’ defense will probably give up points—they always do. That means Fields will need to score to keep pace.
This is exactly the kind of game he’s never won. If he can finally break through and get a W when the defense allows 21+, it changes the narrative.
If he loses again, that 0-27 record will look even worse. And it becomes harder to defend keeping him as the starter.
Career on the Line
Fields came into the league with huge promise. Chicago drafted him 11th overall in 2021 out of Ohio State. He set the single-game rushing record for a quarterback and became just the third QB ever with 1,000 rushing yards in a season.
But he’s also 14-32 as a starter for his career. He’s thrown 46 touchdowns and 31 interceptions over 50 games.
Those aren’t numbers that inspire confidence. Especially when you add in the 0-26 stat against teams that score.

What Happens Next
The Jets need wins. They’re 0-5 and sinking fast. Fields needs to show he can compete in high-scoring games.
If he can’t, New York might start looking at other options. They gave him $30 million guaranteed, but that won’t matter if the losses keep piling up.
Today in London, Fields gets another shot. The setting is different. The opponent is beatable. But the question remains the same—can he finally win when it matters?
