Getting facts right is the most important part of our job. This is how we do it.
Our steps
- Find the source. We trace each claim back to the original source when we can.
- Check at least two sources for important facts, names, dates and numbers.
- Check the numbers. We re-do sums and make sure units and dates are right.
- Separate fact from opinion. We say who said what, and we do not present a claim as fact if it is not confirmed.
- Edit. A second person reads the story before it goes live.
What we avoid
- Anonymous claims we cannot support
- Photos or videos whose source we cannot verify
- Stories that come only from social media posts with no confirmation
When facts are not clear
Breaking news changes fast. If something is not confirmed, we say so, and we update the story when we know more. Updated stories show the update time.
