Season 2 Opens With High Stakes

Episode 1, titled “Death and a Sunset,” premiered today as Tommy Norris faces mounting threats from corporate enemies, federal investigations, and dangerous cartel alliances. The official synopsis warns: “As oil rises from the earth, so do secrets”. M-Tex Oil is under investigation for embezzlement, insurance fraud, and wire fraud—accusations that could destroy everything Tommy has fought to protect.

The season picks up after Season 1’s explosive finale, where Tommy was kidnapped and tortured by the Jimenez cartel before being saved by the real cartel boss, Gallino, who proposed a dangerous partnership. Meanwhile, oil tycoon Monty Miller remains hospitalized, forcing Tommy into the president’s chair just as federal authorities close in.

Sam Elliott Brings Family Conflict

The biggest casting news is Academy Award-nominated actor Sam Elliott joining as T.L., Tommy’s father. Elliott, who previously worked with creator Taylor Sheridan on 1883 and won a Screen Actors Guild Award for that role, brings decades of gravitas to the family drama. According to the official description, T.L. is “a man whose past decisions still haunt his son’s struggles”.

Billy Bob Thornton spoke about working with Elliott in a recent Fox News interview, calling the collaboration a chance to explore deeper family tensions that shaped Tommy’s character.

New Faces, New Problems

Landman Season 2 introduces several fresh characters who complicate Tommy’s life. British-American actor Guy Burnet (Oppenheimer) plays Charlie Newsom, an oil and gas engineer whose arrival signals new corporate power plays. Tony Award winner Miriam Silverman (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) joins as Greta Stidham, described as an “intimidating university admissions counselor”—likely connected to Cooper’s educational future.

Stefania Spampinato enters as Gallino’s wife, adding complexity to the cartel storyline that ended Season 1 with an uneasy truce.

What Critics Are Saying

Landman earned praise for Thornton’s performance, which critics called “one of his best in years”. The show’s unflinching look at America’s oil industry—based on Christian Wallace’s Boomtown podcast—resonates with audiences tired of sanitized corporate dramas. Taylor Sheridan’s signature gritty storytelling, which made Yellowstone a phenomenon, continues here with real locations shot across North Texas.

The series ranked among the Top 10 SVOD Original Series globally in Q4 2024, competing with Sheridan’s other hits Tulsa King and Lioness.
